Backend Architecture & Runtime Orchestration

The ucb_atlas backend is a modular Node.js orchestration layer designed to serve static assets, hydrate data modules, and provide deterministic runtime behavior. Its architecture is evolving toward a fully AI‑backed intelligence layer that will enable semantic search, natural‑language querying, automated localization, and predictive insights across all atlas datasets.

System Logic Flow

Core Responsibilities

  • Static Asset Delivery: Optimized serving of UI assets from /assets with caching and compression.
  • Data Hydration Layer: Loads structured datasets from /data and exposes them to the UI through controlled endpoints.
  • Localization Engine: Dynamically resolves language packs from /localization with region-aware fallbacks.
  • DataOps Pipeline: Executes transformation scripts in /dataops to validate, normalize, and publish datasets.
  • AI Intelligence Layer (Future State): Semantic search, natural‑language querying, automated translation, and AI‑generated insights powered by embeddings, vector indexes, and model pipelines under /ai.

Data Governance & Module Design

Data Module

The /data directory contains curated JSON datasets used by the UI. Each dataset follows a strict schema ensuring consistency across releases.

Localization Packs

The /localization subsystem provides multi-language support with region-aware fallbacks. Future AI augmentation will generate initial translations with human‑verified refinement.

DataOps Scripts

Transformation scripts in /dataops validate, normalize, and publish datasets into the runtime. In the AI‑backed future, DataOps will also generate embeddings and vector indexes.

AI Intelligence Layer

The /ai subsystem (future) will host models, prompts, pipelines, and embeddings. It enables semantic search, dataset summarization, predictive analytics, and natural‑language interaction.

AI‑Enhanced Runtime Orchestration

As ucb_atlas evolves, server.js transitions from a static asset server into a full orchestration gateway. It will manage AI inference routing, model lifecycle, vector lookups, caching, and hybrid responses that combine deterministic data with AI‑generated insights.

AI Endpoints (Planned)

GET /ai/search?q=...
GET /ai/summary/:dataset
POST /ai/translate
POST /ai/insights
These endpoints provide semantic search, summarization, translation, and predictive analytics.

AI Infrastructure

Future DevOps includes GPU‑ready containers, vector databases (pgvector/Qdrant), background AI workers, and model caching layers for low‑latency inference.
